Raccoons are mostly nocturnal. Adult raccoons weigh between 6-25 lbs. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat just about anything from garbage, fish, fruits, pet food to baby birds and frogs. They are good climbers and can access just about any roof or attic. They do not hibernate, but can spend extended periods of time in their den during cold spells. They are usually solitary except for females with their young. Raccoons breed in January to February and have an average litter size of 3-5 young. Calls from customers occur all year long, but often peak from mid March through mid May, females are looking for den sites in which to raise their young. Raccoons often den in attics and chimneys causing customers to complain of chattering and scratching in the walls and ceiling. Raccoons carry rabies and distemper and can become aggressive when approached; therefore they should be avoided when possible.
