Voles are a pear-shaped, short eared, short tailed animal about 4-10 inches in length.  They eat vertebrate and landscape plants.  They are known to cause damage to young trees from eating the roots and the bark around the bottom of the tree.  They also dig holes in your yard, and eat flower bulbs.
